Interim Assessment Question: Compulsory - 30 marks 

1. Should be typed; double-spaced, size 12 font; with a cover page detailing the Group (A or B) as well as the IA group, whether group 1, 2, etc. and the index numbers of all the group members who took part in doing the work.

2. Should be between 7-8 pages (excluding cover page), including references cited.

Research Essay Question
1.  With reference to Patrick O'Neil (2007, 2010) and other relevant scholars, distinguish between a state and a nation, explaining how these two concepts are related to nationalism. How important is it to distinguish states into strong, weak, failing and failed states? Give one example of each type of state in today's world, justifying your choice where necessary. Does the recent debacle in Ukraine viz. a viz. Russia's recent actions depict the typical relations expected between powerful and less powerful states? Why or why not?
